English 9 Pre-AP |
"Language is fundamental to thinking, learning, and communicating in all cultures".
(BC Ministry of Education English Language Arts curriculum package) |
This course covers the same curriculum that the regular English 9 class does, yet we move at a slightly accelerated speed and delve deeper into topics and units of study. Expectations for this course are high, and I expect students to arrive in class on time and prepared to participate, learn and cooperate with one another. Students will be expected to ensure assignments are handed in on time, use class time effectively, and engage fully and with a positive attitude. Some assignments and readings will be required to be completed at home on occasion. The three streams of the English Language Arts curriculum in British Columbia are: reading and viewing; writing and representing; and speaking and listening. Using a variety of approaches, I aim to instill within my students a love for all areas of the English Language Arts and assist them to develop the literacy skills that are essential for communication in our dynamic and increasingly digital world.
Unit 1: What is my Story?: Goals, beliefs and the stories of who I am
~ Letter of Introduction
~ Reading and Writing Notebooks - writer's handbook and the Reading Response Notebook. ~ Memoirs - telling our stories through personal narratives. Students are to write a 1-4 page memoir about a time in their life that was significant. For some fun and inspiration for memoirs, check out SMITH Magazine's site for "Six-Word Memoirs". It's a movement, inspired by Ernest Hemingway, that has really taken to the web: Six-Word Memoirs |
