It’s only January, but with all the transitions that are happening in our district next year – new schools and new grade configurations – we are already starting to think about what next year will look like. It’s hard to believe that all the students I teach this year will be heading to high school next year; I’ve never been in a situation where I have two grade groups leaving the school. It’s bittersweet; I am excited for them but will also miss them here at Spencer. Belmont counselors come tomorrow for the Grade 8s for the first of two visits and there is a Parent’s Night scheduled here for Grade 8s and 9s at Spencer for this Wednesday evening. I encourage all of you to attend and get a better idea of what the new Belmont will be like.
On a positive note, we have arranged for a Grade 8 and 9 Fieldtrip to happen this year. A fieldtrip for the Grade 8s and 9s hasn’t happened here at Spencer in many years, so I am happy to announce that on June 15 we will be taking the students to Playland in Vancouver! There will be a cost for this trip (approximately $55) and an information letter will be coming home in the next couple of months, but I wanted to give my students advance warning. Clearly, students must exhibit fabulous behavior at school in order to come on this trip. As well, if finances are an issue please connect with me and I will work something out to help alleviate some or all of the costs.
In the meantime, here are the assignments this week:
Div 8-01: Small group presentations (Vikings Daily Life) due tomorrow; reading the ’12 Labours of Heracles’ myth on Thursday and Friday. Reenacting the myth with a skit (Friday).
Div 8-02: Vikings presentations were done today. Started reading “Heracles” and vocabulary rating for that is due on Wednesday. Will soon be starting a unit on Medieval Japan.
English 9 Pre-AP: students collaboratively working on their script for a play or video. This assignment will be performed or presented on Wednesday, Jan. 28th. Some students have overdue assignments: their zine and their Reader Response booklet.
Word of the day: Playland
